Biography:
Chad is one of Kurosaki Ichigo’s best friends. They first met in junior high, when Chad came to Ichigo’s rescue when some upperclassmen were trying to beat him up because he was different. Ichigo gave him the nickname “Chad,” and even though Chad tried to correct him at first, he eventually gave up and allowed Ichigo and their other friends to call him Chad.

Chad is very big, and very strong. Even though he used to be a bully, he is now generally a gentle giant, and only uses his strength when the circumstances absolutely demand it. When Ichigo first meets him, Chad explains this, and Ichigo shrugs it off. He does point out that they’re the same kind of person. They both stick out: Ichigo for his hair, and Chad for his size. This is one of the main reasons why they become such close friends.

After Chad had a close call with the same group of upperclassmen that beat Ichigo up and Ichigo saved him, they made a pact. Ichigo said because Chad wouldn’t fight for himself, he would fight for him. But only if Chad did the same for him.

Chad was born in Japan, but when his parents died when he was eight, he was sent to live with his only living relative, his abuelo in Mexico, Oscar Joaquin de la Rosa. He, in turn, died when Chad was twelve, and Chad returned to Japan, with one of his only mementos of that time a coin he wears on a chain around his neck. It is his most prized possession.

Chad first became entangled in Ichigo’s ever more complicated world when he came into possession of a parakeet that harbored the soul of a little boy, Shibata Yuuichi. Yuuichi was being pursued relentlessly by a hollow, and Chad swore to protect him with his life. Ichigo and Rukia noticed the soul in the parakeet, but when the hollow attacked Chad directly and was admitted to the Kurosaki clinic, they both took a renewed and shocked interest in the situation and proceeded to figure out what was going on.

Before Ichigo arrived at the scene, Rukia was left to try to protect Chad from the hollow that he couldn’t see. Chad surprised both Rukia and the hollow by hitting the hollow through dumb luck. He went on to try to beat up the hollow until Ichigo arrived and destroyed the hollow.

Not long after that incident, when Ishida Uryuu challenged Ichigo and released the hollow bait, Chad wound up saving Ichigo’s little sister Karin from a hollow he could almost see. She helped him by acting as his eyes, and his desire to protect her helped awaken his dormant spiritual powers that manifested in the bizarre arm armor that he now uses. He defeated the hollow, and passed out. After Karin ran to get her father to help him, Urahara showed up and took him back to the Shouten where he had also brought Inoue Orihime. He told them that they had been given the key to a door that had been locked until just then, and told them that they had the option of ignoring it or opening the door.

They both chose to open that door, and were put into training with Yoruichi in her cat form while Ichigo trained with Urahara. Chad went to Soul Society not because he had a burning desire to save Rukia himself, but because Ichigo did, and he would help him achieve that goal under any circumstances.

Until his meeting with the captain of the Eighth Division Kyouraku Shunsui, Chad traveled through Soul Society unscathed and was a large part of the defeat of the shinigami of the Gotei 13, including the Fourth Seat shinigami of the Eighth Division. After his defeat at the hands of Shunsui, he was transported to a cell in the Fourth Division headquarters and received treatment for his wounds.

Upon his return to the material world, Chad and Orihime were the first to purposely come upon Ulquiorra and Yami, the first two Arrancar to appear. Chad was quickly defeated by Yami and had his right arm severed by Yami. Orihime immediately sent Shonou and Ayame to repair the damage done.

Once he was healed he begged Urahara for training. He is currently under the Shouten training with the vice captain of the Sixth Division Abarai Renji under Urahara’s careful watch.
